How do I know what type of drinking water system I need?

First, consider the actual application for the drinking water system in your home. Drinking water filtration systems fall under two broad application platforms:
    1. Point-Of-Use (POU) Systems. POU systems are very popular and affordable. They are designed to provide the treated, filtered water to one specific location…such as a dedicated faucet that is connected only to the POU system. Furthermore, POU systems may be “under-counter” or “counter-top” systems. Under-counter systems install easily under a kitchen sink and do not take up any counter space. The filtered water is supplied to an attractive faucet installed on the sink next to the main sink faucet. Most reverse osmosis and ultra-filtration systems are “under-counter” systems. Counter-top systems are self-contained systems that connect to the main faucet aerator through the use of a diverter valve and supply the filtered water through an integrated faucet on the unit itself. A flexible, food-quality hose is used to make the connection and can easily be attached and removed from the faucet as needed.
    2. Point-Of-Entry (POE) Systems. POE systems, as the name implies, installs on the incoming water service going into the home. They are usually installed in a garage or outside (in moderate climates where freezing is not an issue) and treat all of the water going into the home. POE systems can be used to reduce chlorines, VOCs, tastes, odors and a range of other contaminants depending on the filtration media used. Because a POE system must be able to maintain much higher flow rates of treated water than POU systems, there may be some limitations on reducing certain contaminants. For example, if your concern is to remove chlorine and fluoride from drinking water, you should consider a reverse osmosis system or our fluoride filter system (both POU) for application under the sink. The POE system will remove the chlorine but not the fluoride. Be sure to check the specifications of any POE system you are considering and pay special attention to the capacity of the filters between replacements. Of course, many of our customers choose both a POE and POU system, which supplies healthy water for cooking, showering, bathing, laundry and drinking…with special emphasis on highly purified drinking water.

I have city water…do I still need to consider a drinking water system?

YES! Especially if you have city (or other municipally-supplied) water! Unfortunately, the condition of our municipal water sources (ground water and surface water) and the condition of the many miles of utility pipe infrastructure to deliver this water to your home is constantly changing and leaves too many variables that may be a factor in the delivered water quality. For expanded discussion on this topic, please read our section “Why Water Filtration”. Just remember…any of the drinking water systems we offer will dramatically improve the overall quality and taste of tap water and allow your family to enjoy and benefit from healthy, great-tasting water for just pennies a gallon and in an environmentally responsible way.

I already have a water softener. Will that give me high-quality drinking water?

A water softener will improve the quality of the water with respect to your indoor plumbing and fixtures, but they are not designed to reduce the contaminants that may be in your water. Water softeners use an ion exchange process to replace the “hard” calcium and magnesium ions in your water with sodium ions. This is why softeners use a form of salt in a brine tank. There are many advantages to soft water…that is, water with no calcium and magnesium, but these benefits center around the prevention of scale and sediment build-up in plumbing, water heaters and fixtures. Also, softened water is desirable for bathing and laundry.

But for healthy drinking water when using a softener, the best option is often a reverse osmosis system. This will remove most of the unhealthy contaminants in the water along with the additional sodium (salt) that was added by the softener. Many people already have too much salt in their diet and healthy water does not include salt in any form.

Are shower filters important?

The real question here is “How important is it to remove the chlorine from my shower water”? The answer is that it is VERY important. shower filters. Shower filters offer a very inexpensive option to remove chlorine from an individual shower fixture, while a whole-house filtration system can remove the chlorine from all shower, bath and faucet fixtures, along with many other contaminants. By using one method or the other, you are taking an important step forward in safeguarding your family’s health from this risk. Numerous studies and articles…including the American Journal of Public Health continue to raise mounting evidence and warnings of the long-term health risks associated with showering and bathing in chlorinated water. Chlorine is a toxic chemical. It is used in water treatment to reduce and kill forms of biological agents, such as bacteria and viruses found in water systems. Chlorine is harmful to you when you drink it and when it is absorbed into our skin and inhaled into your lungs when you shower. It has been estimated that the "shower steam" in your bathroom can contain up to 100 times the amount of chlorine than the water, because chlorine evaporates out of water at a relatively low temperature. If you bathe or shower in unfiltered tap water you are inhaling and absorbing chlorine into your body. Conditions contributed to or aggravated by chlorine exposure:
    • Respiratory Conditions (nose, throat, lungs, sinuses): Asthma, bronchitis
    • Hair: Dry, brittle
    • Skin: Dry, flaking, dandruff, itching, rashes (especially with infants and children)
    • Eyes conditions
Chlorine is universally used to chemically disinfect water. It kills germs, bacteria and other living organisms. Chlorine readily passes through the cell wall and attaches to the fatty acids of the cell, disrupting the life sustaining functions. The human body is composed of billions of cells. Most people are aware that the quality of their drinking water can be improved by filtering their tap water or buying bottled water. However, many do not realize that they are addressing only a part of the problem. One half of our daily chlorine exposure is from showering. Chlorine is not only absorbed through the skin, but also re-vaporized in the shower, inhaled into the lungs, and transferred directly into the blood system. In fact, the chlorine exposure from one shower is equal to an entire day's amount of drinking the same water. Drinking filtered tap water is important, as are taking steps to ensure that we don’t expose our bodies to chlorine from showering as well.
